For this production of Gounod's Faust, scenic/costume designer Vita Tzykun and
I teamed up with sculptor/animator/photographer John Frame and stage director Kevin Newbury to place the story of Faust within the beautiful and enigmatic world of Frame's visual work.
My goal with the projection design was to bring Frame's imagery to life in a way that was mysterious, organic, and always unexpected. To do this, Tzykun and I created our respective designs in a step-by-step process, working in the same studio, so that the projections would be seamlessly integrated into the scenic environment.
My video team and I made extensive use of projection mapping and custom-developed high contrast paint formulas to use every surface of the stage as a projection target.
I spent two weeks working closely with Frame in his California studio, where we combined his skills in stop motion animation with mine in motion graphics and video design to create new work and transform his existing video and photographic work into projection imagery that could interweave with the musical timing and spatial environment of the production. The result was a complex and beautiful collaboration that was refined in the the theater when we joined forces with Duane Schuler's dramatically and technically sensitive lighting design.
